International Telecommunications Union Delegation tours PGH Telemedicine Centre.

Dr Portia Manangazira (seated) who is the Director – Epidemiology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Care led a delegation to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals Telemedicine Centre during consultations on the E-Health Strategy. She was accompanied by experts from the International Telecommunications Union led by Ms Chali Tumelo (lady in white), the Area Representative for Southern Africa.

The delegation toured the telemedicine centre and had an understanding of how it works. Telemedicine allows health care professionals to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients at a distance using telecommunications technology.

It uses remote communication and computer multimedia technologies to provide medical information and services. It includes remote consultation, remote education, remote medical information services and other medical activities. Essentially, telemedicine is meant to speed up the link between tertiary health facilities and primary health care systems.
